ABOUT THE CENTRE

The Centre contributes to the development and promotion of film knowledge by offering a wide range of cultural and educational activities, such as film screenings, discussion panels, film music concerts, exhibitions, and workshops for children and youth.

The Centre’s mission is to shape a conscious, artistically engaged audience and to foster a deep understanding of both contemporary and classic cinema.

The Wajda Film Centre is a vibrant and modern institution that plays a key role in nurturing Polish film culture and encouraging young people to explore the world through the lens of cinema.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

“25th Anniversary of the Oscar for Andrzej Wajda”
An international project celebrating the work of a master of world cinema

The year 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of Andrzej Wajda receiving the Honorary Academy Award® for Lifetime Achievement—an accolade that confirmed his status as one of the most significant directors in the history of global cinema.

To commemorate this milestone, the Andrzej Wajda Film Culture Centre has launched a unique international project aimed at honoring the life and legacy of a filmmaker whose name stands alongside those of Bergman, Fellini, and Kurosawa, and whose works continue to inspire artists such as Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Francis Ford Coppola.

As part of the New York Polish Film Festival, the Centre invites American audiences to special screenings of Andrzej Wajda’s greatest and most compelling films, along with a panel discussion featuring both Polish and American film experts.

A key element of each event will be a reflection on the continuing relevance of the themes explored in Wajda’s work—freedom, democracy, and civic engagement—and their significance in today’s world.

The project will continue in the fall in Los Angeles and in Warsaw in 2026, when Poland will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Andrzej Wajda’s birth.

The “25th Anniversary of the Oscar for Andrzej Wajda” is a tribute to a body of work that transcends cultural and temporal boundaries, to an artist who used the language of cinema to build bridges of understanding, and to values that—like his films—remain as vital today as when they were first created.
